A TEAM Effort

Several years ago, the Second Presbyterian Church Youth shared their motto during a Hunger Buster delivery: Together Everyone Accomplishes More. This TEAM effort continues to play out well at the Presbyterian Community Center.

Each fall, the youth of First Evangelical Presbyterian Church and Covenant Presbyterian Church invite neighbors to join their efforts of stocking the PCC Food Pantry through a fun Trick or Treat So Others Can Eat food drive. One week the youth distribute paper bags to their community with a note asking for participation. The next week the bags are collected, processed and delivered to the PCC. BSA Troop #5 at Huntington Court UMC followed suit with a delivery from their community the week before Thanksgiving. (It is the most wonderful time of the year…when PCC staff and volunteers are at their most creative in finding storage for the abundance of food received.)

A few new players joined the TEAM. The Junior League of Roanoke Valley’s new member Done-In-A-Day project participants, Member One co-workers and Cave Spring High School Key Club. It was a real treat to have their help as everyone loaded, unloaded, sorted, boxed, shelved, cleared and cleaned up. At the end of the day there was a mix between total exhaustion and complete satisfaction!!!

Not to be left out, Team Chicken Noodle and Team Tomato Soup had their own friendly Souper Bowl competition at Covenant Presbyterian Church where Tomato Soup proved the champion this year. Thrasher Memorial UMC and Campbell Memorial Presbyterian Church added support with their soup deliveries, which continues to provide many warm meals for PCC clients.

Another TEAM effort began with a simple observation by Carol Worley, a pantry volunteer from Second Presbyterian Church, who noticed the dismal condition of the best grocery cart used to transport PCC food orders to each client’s car. Carol’s quest to find a solution took her from Second Presbyterian’s Mission Committee to Feeding America to Food Lion’s Vinton store manager, Houston Wallace, who donated four grocery carts to PCC.

Won’t YOU join the PCC TEAM? Together we will accomplish more. Our collective resources, energy and determination advance the PCC mission, lift up the community, and along the way touch the lives of many very appreciative individuals.
